Interview Overview
Sandra Rosenbloom has been interested in transportation since childhood. As a new graduate of UCLA’s MPA program in the 1960’s, she conducted the first study of taxicab use in the United States , learning how variations in state licensing requirements directly affected the availability of cabs on the street. From taxicabs, she shifted her attention to rail use and improving transportation to revitalize downtown urban areas.
In this interview, Rosenbloom covers a wide variety of topics including: urban rail systems, how travel needs are changed by poverty, womens' dependence on cars, the ways in which parking laws and carpooling demands effect women more than men, the relationship between childcare and toll-roads, the importance of mobility in older age and the options that must be offered in order to have these needs met, and creating neo-traditional housing situations within existing communities that benefit older adults.
