Bike to Work Day May 14, 2009 Information Page
As part of its mission, SafeTREC seeks to promote active transportation modes, such as bicycling, while keeping a focus on safety. Bike to Work Day is one of the leading efforts to showcase bicycles as an everyday form of transportation, whose safety is as important as safety in other modes. The following links and information are offered in the hope that they will help make this an enjoyable, and healthy, experience.
Energizer stations are being operated by a coalition of bicycle supporters around the Bay.
For bicyclists traveling to or near, the Berkeley campus:
Berkeley is one of the few cities in the U.S. to have created a functional network of Bicycle Boulevards. They all are useful for trips to campus. They are marked by purple bicycle boulevard signs and a white bicyclist stencil in the middle of the street.
UC Berkeley Parking and Transportation has a Bike to Work Day page. There is free secure valet bicycle parking at 3 BART stations: Embarcadero, Fruitvale and Downtown Berkeley (no BART ticket purchase required).
For bicyclists traveling elsewhere in the Bay Area:
511.org has a Bike to Work Day, May 14, 2009 Web site, including information on how bicyclists can ride free on the Alameda-Oakland and the Alameda-Harbor Bay ferries on May 14.
511.org's Bicycling Resource Guide provides information on numerous aspects of bicycling in the East Bay, including the 511 BikeMapper, route maps, locations of lockers and racks, information on how to take your bike on public transit and across Bay Area toll bridges, how to ride safely in traffic, tips on commuting, bicycle resources and more. It also has a 511 Ridematch Tool to find a Bike Buddy for new riders.
In addition to numerous cycling clubs around the Bay, the East Bay Bicycle Coalition, the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition, the Marin County Bicycle Coalition, and the Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition are among the many advocacy and resource groups for people interested in learning more about biking practicalities and recreation. They will be sponsoring refreshment stations on bike to work day.
