TSC Director David Ragland: "Overview of Rural Traffic Safety" at the 2008 Summer Institute of the Center for Excellence in Rural Safety, "The policies and political challenges to reducing rural traffic fatalities," presented by the University of Minnesota in cooperation with the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) July 28-29, 2008.
January 13-17, 2008: TSC at TRB: Traffic Safety Center staff is presenting four papers and five posters at the 2008 Annual Meeting of the Transportation Research Board, in Washington, D.C., the world's largest gathering of transportation professionals and academics.
"Safety in Multimodal Transportation Systems," TSC Director David Ragland talk on Wednesday, October 31, 2007, at the first annual PATH-UTC Conference, "On the Road to Sustainability: From Research to Practice."
Our transportation systems are facing two major crises: (i) increasing demand for energy to run these systems and (ii) enormous environmental impacts associated with building and running them. Responding to these crises will require our transportation systems to become increasingly multi-modal. From the current focus on individual motor vehicles, transportation systems must accommodate transit, walking, biking, and the like to a much greater degree. The mixing of these various modes has clear safety implications. This presentation will address the following policy and research issues in monitoring and enhancing safety in emerging multi-modal transportation systems
- Monitoring exposure and risk
- Statistical patterns of collisions and injury
- Statistical models of conflict and collisions
- Conflicting conceptual models of safe environments (e.g., separation versus integration of modes)
- Strategies to improve safety for all transportation system users
- Institutionalization of safety for non-motorized modes
- Individual versus societal consequences of transportation mode choices
- The future of safety in multi-modal environments
TSC takes part in the California Bicycle Coalition's 3rd Biennial walk/bike California Conference, September 11-17, 2007.
The Traffic Safety Center coordinated the traffic safety sessions, Track C3, for the 11th World Conference on Transportation Research, June 24-28, 2007.
The Traffic Safety Center is a regular, active participant in the annual conference of the Transportation Research Board. See the schedule of TSC participation in TRB's 2007 Annual Meeting.
